To: Department of Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer:
For the sake of our children, please act on The Cancer Project’s petition urging that the U.S. Department of Agriculture halt the distribution and subsidization of processed meat products through the National School Lunch Program. Scientific studies now clearly show that hot dogs and other processed meats cause cancer. The 2007 World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research’s “Second Expert Report” summarized the evidence on the link between processed meats and cancer risk and concluded that “processed meat is a convincing cause of colorectal cancer” (WCRF 2007). Children especially need to be safeguarded against products that will increase their risk of cancer in adulthood—let’s start in our school cafeterias. |
