The Cancer Project 2010 Action Plan

Nutrition and Cooking Programs

  • Extend Food for Life Classes to at least 20 new cities to reach a total of 150 cities and tens of thousands of people!

  • Partner with local communities to create new programs for underserved residents, who are the most vulnerable to poor eating habits that ultimately jeopardize their health.

  • Create new Food for Life programs to inspire children to learn healthy eating habits that will carry them through adulthood.

  • Strengthen our Food for Life alumni network to provide ongoing information and motivation after classes have ended with an online community, conference calls, and local gatherings.

Educational Resources

  • Expand The Cancer Project Book Angel program to make The Cancer Survivor’s Guide more accessible to people struggling to survive a cancer diagnosis.

  • Enhance our library of free information on diet’s role in cancer prevention and survival.

Public Health and Advocacy Campaigns

  • Aggressively pursue a lawsuit we filed in 2009 against a number of fast-food restaurants to require them to disclose warnings to customers that their grilled chicken products contain the known carcinogen PhIP.

  • Continue to distribute public service announcements (PSAs) featuring Emmy-award winning actress Jennifer Landon and Olympic gold medalist Dorothy Hamill and develop new PSAs to promote cancer prevention and survival.

Research

  • Continue our five-year clinical research study at the University of California, San Diego on the effects of a plant-based diet on prostate cancer prevention and survival.

  • Launch a large-scale study to map the effectiveness of our nutrition education program on affecting life-changing behaviors and eating habits.
